The most well know moor in Devon, made famous through its inclusion in Hollywood blockbusters and as the inspiration for Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles. Dartmoor covering nearly 400 square miles of rugged moorland interspersed with many picturesque villages and attractions, has something for everyone. If you’re into walking then you can walk for miles and not see another person – enjoying all the unspoilt beauty and charm of Dartmoor.
What better way to see and enjoy the moor than with a campervan hire, travelling from place to place and having the freedom to do everything at your own pace, hiring a campervan from VW Camper Hire means that you will have everything at your disposal wherever you are on the Moor. Because our campervans are based on popular VW campers they are small enough and easy to drive, meaning you can feel comfortable navigating the quiet roads.
We have pulled together a handful of our favourites from spending time discovering Dartmoor.
Walking – what better place, whether you’re walking with friends or family, or your four legged friend then the options are endless – from walks for whole family to enjoy to more adventurous hiking then it has them all. We have walked many of the routes including the famous Haytor, with a family and Bonnie the dog, everyone has had a great time particularly clambering over the rocks or playing hide and seek up on Haytor.
We took our bikes with us and followed part of the route The Tour of Britain took in 2013, obviously at a calmer pace. There are miles of on and off road routes all over Dartmoor and it’s easy to park up the campervan, unload the bikes and head off for as long or short a ride as you fancy. The website www.dartmoor.co.uk had plenty of routes that you can choose from graded into easy, moderate and hard.
Camping – If you’re looking for a campervan base in Devon or somewhere to pitch for the night the Harford Bridge Park on the edge of Dartmoor by the River Tavy is a great location which has been awarded 4 pennants by the AA with a special distinction for the conservation that has taken place. The site if really flexible, none of the pitches are squeezed so everyone can enjoy the feeling of being outdoors in the green countryside. The facilities are all bang up to date including the toilets and shower blocks (always important for us choosing somewhere). The market town of Tavistock is only a mile away with its lively pannier market open every day and various street and farmers markets popping up during the week.
With the Devon depot of VW Camper Hire less than an hour’s driving from Dartmoor what could be easier for a great weekend or part of a longer trip. With most of our campervans available to take pets as well – everyone can be included!
